The True Self Series

Welcome!   This series is focused on encouraging you to reflect on your true self. Your true self transcends the habits and patterns you developed during childhood, as well as your cultural influences. Your true self is the wise seed within you that strives to experience the full expression of your connection to others, your sense of purpose, your joy, and the recognition of your self-worth. This authentic self is a reflection of your true nature and deepest desires.

One of the benefits of the work I do with individuals and couples is clarifying and practicing how to identify and speak from this deeper sense of self. In this series, we will look at characteristics of the true self.

AFFIRMATION

Perceptive

I orientate myself toward perceiving wisdom within myself and others.

My authentic self is sensitive to those around me as well as to myself. I am able to quietly reflect on my own feelings and needs, and patiently listen for and observe the feelings and needs of those I care about. I release my need to press an agenda or know in the moment what is best for everyone. I choose to listen, observe, and remain open.

I allow myself to be in a state of looking and listening for the right, next action.

I realize when I come with preconceived ideas, I will try to make the other person fit into my predetermined solutions. Instead, I allow dialogue to be an exploration rather than an exercise in finding a definitive conclusion.

TIP

Release the Need to Have Solutions

In at least one conversation this week, try being in a space of “not knowing” and resolving to release the need to have the answer or provide a solution. Tell the other person you are going to take time to reflect on what has been said and that the two of you can explore more later.

When you do return to the conversation, come with an attitude of curiosity to explore more deeply, rather than with the inflexibility of knowing what needs to happen.
